We want to empower individuals to build affordable, highly efficient, clean-burning wood stoves in their own homes by facilitating workshops in Portugal and abroad.

Upcoming Workshops

May 15 – 20 2022, Benfeita, Portugal

Learn how to build a Batch Rocket Stove mass heater

Workshop overview

This workshop is part of a 5-week Natural Building Workshop but can also be done on its own. The workshop runs in the last week (5 days) of the full workshop.

In this workshop we will teach you how to build a BatchRocket mass heater with heated bench. The BatchRocket is an application of the Rocket Stove and is a type of mass heater or masonry stove. The design that we will build together derives from an open-source effort mainly driven by Peter van den Berg to adapt rocket stove technology for home heating. Our purpose is to educate you in the skills and knowledge needed to start building the heater in your own home.

Workshop outline

The stove will be built in the adega/old wine-making barn, a large 4.5x5m room against an outside wall of the original stone farmhouse, about 80 cm thick. This room will be used for accommodation and yoga through winter, so the idea is to warm the room, and the inside wall and thus some of the other rooms too.

In this workshop you will learn BatchRocket/Mass Heaters as opposed to conventional heaters, their history, sizing and dimensions, ideas of how to finish it, current and future developments and, of course, how to build it!

BATCH ROCKET MASS HEATER EXPERIMENTIBUILD

We will be teaching a few days of this workshop and our good friend and neighbour Wendy from “Permaculturing in Portugal” will be teaching the biggest part of it. We will be building the socalled core of the heater, the engine if you like. Wendy will be focussing on the building of the bell, the battery of the system where all this lovely heat is stored that our core generates.

Heres a bit of the text of her website and theres more if you click on the button below. This is also where you can register.

During the last decade, largely thanks to a handful of tireless experimenters and engineers, rocket mass heaters have become very much more sophisticated, reliable and efficient. Formulas have been worked out to determine optimum performace characteristics, materials refined, temperatures and airflows measured and computed, designs tweaked … so that, while every construction still has its unique variables, the whole process is much less hit-and-miss.

Mostly …

This course/workshop continues in the grand tradition of DIY rocket stove experimentation. We are going to build a batch rocket mass heater for the classroom in the communal building at the quinta, but we’re going to do it in a configuration which, to our knowledge, hasn’t been tried before, so this is also an experiment. We’re going to build a test configuration, see if it works, tear part of it down again, add the heater core, and then rebuild according to the results of the test.

We’ve run the design idea past some of the luminaries of rocket stove experimentation and development and they’re split in their opinions. Half say there’s no reason why it shouldn’t work so go for it and report back. The other half say it’s not going to work. We intend to find out …

So this is a chance for learning not just the principles of mass heater design and function and how to construct one, but to play around with how they can be pushed design-wise, evaluate the various aspects of resulting performance, and then correct it.

Participants will learn …

  • the principles of design and function of masonry/mass heaters
  • the principles of ‘free gas movement’, the Russian-pioneered revolution in the design of traditional masonry stoves
  • the essential ratios in sizing and designing a mass heater
  • the construction of the heater core, the ‘engine’ of a rocket stove
  • cob construction
  • using cob in stove/heater construction
  • the construction of the ‘bell’, the heat-retaining structure of a mass heater
  • cob and earthen plasters as render for interior walls

The project is involved in social and locally networked projects with other local permaculture and sustainability tribes. See pictures below.

Accommodation options include camping, or for an additional charge, a room nearby.

Camping
There are plenty of places to pitch your own tent which is included in the workshop price. The land is cleared hayfields, with shade from Ash trees, Olive trees or a large Cherry. There are at least 5 separate and fairly private camp areas on grass/hay. (At the time of the course it will usually be quite hot and very dry) There is a wetroom/shower indoors, 2 toilets, and an outdoor shower available to campers. Cooking facilities and meals are shared, but there will be basic food storage (a little refrigeration space, and indoor food storage shelf), tea/coffee making facilities and gas cooker available in an outdoor kitchen. Solar lighting is in place for nighttime.
There are limited places for Camper vans - please confirm with us whether it's possible to bring and sleep in it.

Rooms
At an additional cost there are rooms with shared bathrooms available closeby. There is an apartment with 2 double bedrooms that can host 4 people with excellent cooking facilities and a modern wetroom/toilet. The entire space is to rent for €40 per night, so it is expected that 2-4 attendees requiring rooms will share this cost.

Alternatively, if more people need private rooms, various neighbours have offered accommodation, some within walking distance, some a little further away requiring a car or bicycle, mostly in double rooms with shared bathrooms. Costs vary so please contact us to discuss your requirements, and for more details.

Descrição do Workshop

Programa diário do workshop:

Sessão de Yoga/meditação ao acordar
8.30 – 9.00 Pequeno-almoço
9.00 – 9.30 Círculo Matinal
9.30 – 10.15 Teoria por detrás de "fornos foguete"
10.15 – 11.15 Construção
11.15 – 11.30 Lanche (café/chá)
11.30 – 13.00 Construção
13.00 – 14.30 Almoço & Descanso
14.30 – 16.30 Construção
16.30 – 17.00 Lanche (café/chá)
17.00 – 18.30 Construção
18.30 – 19.00 Tempo Livre
19.00 – 20.00 Jantar

100mm BatchRocket Mass Heater

Workshop

We were invited by a lovely family in Cyprus to build a BatchRocket mass heater for their adobe brick house. Cyprus has a similar climate to Portugal so ideal for our 100mm BatchRocket system.

It was a very new and interesting process for us because we could not take any of our own tools with us nor could we prepare any of the parts of the heaters as we normally do. we created material lists and tool lists for the family to gather before the workshop., We had to adjust our usual design for us to be able to make anything on the spot. For exampl.,e,. we normally cast several of the parts we user in the heater beforehand, but we didnt have time to do this so we had to improvise. Everything went very smoothly and the results were:

  • a very happy family
  • inspired workshop participants
  • a beautiful heater in a equally beautiful house
  • and two very fulfilled facilitators inspired to do many more workshops
